Postdoctoral Research Associate, Theoretical study of quantum materialsJob ID 1526 Date posted 11/13/2018
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division (CMPMSD) has a very strong tradition of research in strongly correlated materials using several experiment techniques including x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and photoelectron spectroscopy, etc. This is complemented by excellent sample synthesis capabilities and strong theoretical support.
The Condensed Matter Theory Group conducts basic research over a wide swath of theoretical physics, ranging from strongly correlated electrons to first-principles electronic structure theory. We coordinate our research efforts closely with experimental efforts both within the CMPMSD as well as the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the National Synchrotron Light Source II. Our main topics of research are: Theory of high-temperature superconductivity, low-dimensional transport in nanostructures and mesoscopic systems, low-dimensional magnetism, non-equilibrium physics in strongly correlated systems, Wannier-function based approaches to first-principles computations.
The successful candidate will work with Weiguo Yin, Alexei Tsvelik and Robert Konik in the Condensed Matter Theory Group.
The Condensed Matter Theory Group is seeking a postdoctoral research associate for theoretical and computational study of quantum materials with exotic topological properties and unconventional superconductivity. This involves performing state-of-the-art atomistic modeling and simulation, guiding materials synthesis and characterization, and disseminating the conclusions in scientific publications and talks.
