Postdoctoral Research Associate - PhysicsJob ID 2029 Date posted 01/29/2020
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The mission of the Physics Department is to be involved in research using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The STAR Group in the Physics Department at BNL contributes to the overall STAR Experiment. The STAR collaboration constructs and operates experimental apparatus for the STAR experiment located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and coordinates the production of scientific results using this apparatus. The STAR group works with collaborators from around the world to share science data and shape the scientific program. Members of the STAR group have expertise on dilepton, photon, quarkonia, jets, and multi-particle correlations.
The Physics Department has an opening for a Research Associate. The selected candidate will work closely with scientists in the STAR group on physics analysis and paper publication utilizing data taken during Beam Energy Scan Phase II (BESII) to address fundamental property of QCD matter. Three major upgrades to the STAR Experiment for the Beam Energy Scan Phase II (BESII) program will take place 2019-2021: the inner Time Projection Chamber, the endcap Time of Flight detector, and the Event Plane Detector. In addition, STAR is in the process of upgrading the detector at forward rapidity for cold QCD and a heavy ion physics program to run in years 2021 to 2025.
