Postdoctoral Research Associate Oxide Molecular Beam EpitaxyJob ID 1914 Date posted 10/19/2019
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) is one of the most important problems in Condensed Matter Physics. Some basic facts - the dimensionality, the spin and the charge of free carriers, the nature of superconducting transition and the effective interaction that causes electron pairing - are still unclear.
Using a unique atomic-layer (‘digital’) molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system, wesynthesize single-crystal films of HTS cuprates as well as multilayers and superlattices with atomically perfect interfaces, and manufacture tunnel junctions, field-effect devices, and HTS nano-structures.
The program impact is twofold. The group is the source of unique samples, including the highest-quality HTS films and multilayer hetero-structures engineered down to a single atomic layer that are enabling breakthrough research of few dozen groups at national laboratories and leading universities in US and abroad. In-house experiments have also brought in several important results ‑ discovery of HTS interface superconductivity, demonstration of Giant Proximity Effect, HTS in a single CuO2 layer, evidence for small (local) electron pairs, and their (de)localization at the superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition. These experiments provide clear-cut answers to at least some of the above questions, and significantly impact research on HTS and more broadly on strongly-correlated materials.
Postdoctoral research associate in charge of 1) running, maintaining, and upgrading an oxide molecular beam epitaxy system; 2) synthesis and characterization of thin films of complex oxides by XRD, AFM, transport and magnetic measurements; 3) analyzing the data and reporting the results in research publications and conferences.
- PhD in Condensed Matter Physics
- Extensive hands-on experience in designing, building, maintaining and operating UHV deposition equipment and specifically with oxide-MBE
- Proficiency with atomic-beam rate measurements, surface-science tools such as RHEED and ionic scattering, and other sophisticated laboratory electronics
- Record of publications in high-impact journals
