The Physics Department is heavily involved in the realization of an Electron Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will advance the long-term vision for Nuclear Physics. In December 2019, the US Department of Energy (DOE) gave a green light to the EIC project by declaring critical decision CD-0 (“mission need”) and selecting Brookhaven National Laboratory as the site to host the EIC. The realization of such a facility is of highest priority for the QCD community in the US. The BNL Cold QCD group has been playing a major role in developing the EIC science case as well as developing EIC detector concepts and integrating the physics requirements into the EIC interaction region design.
The Cold QCD group at BNL’s Physics Department has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. You will have a leading role in investigating the novel parton spin entanglements inside of nucleon by using high energy particle collisions, e.g., at RHIC and at the upcoming EIC. We plan to initiate an experimental effort in measuring the parton spin entanglement in proton-proton and electron-proton/nucleus collisions. In addition, we will actively engage world-leading theorists in this direction on quantitative analysis on estimating the impact of entanglements to the nucleon spin structure. This position involves both experimental data analysis at the RHIC spin program and feasibility studies at the EIC experiment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in the data analysis of the proton-proton data at RHIC recorded by the STAR detector to search for the parton spin entanglement phenomena for the first time
- Join the STAR Collaboration and participate in the Spin Physics Working Group
- Participate service works required by the STAR Collaboration, e.g., taking shifts during the data taking
- Work closely with the Cold QCD group for extending the study of spin entanglement to the EIC, where works on EIC ep and/or eA event generators and detector simulations are envisioned
- Join the initial effort in forming the reference EIC detector collaboration planned at the Interaction Point 6
- Present results at meetings, conferences as well as contribute to writing research proposal and publish work in peer-reviewed journals
- Maintain close interaction with all our collaborators in the Cold QCD group and the nuclear theory group at BNL which will be essential for progress on all aspects of this program
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- PhD in Physics or related field
- Experience in high- and medium-energy nuclear and particle physics experiments
- Understanding of experimental techniques and measurements in the field of nuclear / high-energy physics
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Active experience in the field of hadron spin physics, e.g., Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMDs) parton distributions
- Familiarity with experimental measurements using particle correlation techniques
- Familiarity with ep and eA MC generators and detector simulations
- Some domestic and international travel
- Research Associate appointments are made to candidates who have earned a PhD within the past five years or will complete their degree prior to starting the position
- The position is currently for two years and can be renewed for one more year depending on performance and availability of funds
