Postdoctoral Research Associate, Molten salts: Pulse Radiolysis Mechanistic Studies

This position is part of the Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) on Molten Salts in Extreme Environments (MSEE), led by BNL and including Idaho and Oak Ridge National Laboratories and three universities, Iowa, Notre Dame and Stony Brook. The scientific mission of MSEE is to provide fundamental, atomic-level understanding of bulk and interfacial molten salts, the effects of molten salt exposure on metallic interfaces, and the effects of radiation on the associated chemistry and corrosion phenomena.

Work will primarily be performed in the BNL Chemistry Division’s Accelerator Center for Energy Research (ACER), which features the Laser-Electron Accelerator Facility (LEAF) for picosecond pulse radiolysis, and a 2 MeV electron Van de Graaff for longer-timescale experiments. This position will be part of a collaborative, multi-institution team performing electrochemical, structural (x-ray and neutron), spectroscopic (optical and x-ray), and computational studies of molten salt and solute structure, speciation and reactivity in the bulk and at interfaces.



The post-doctoral research associate will be responsible for pulse radiolysis investigations of reaction kinetics in molten salts, in pure form and in mixtures containing other salts and metal ions. The purpose is to understand the speciation and reactivity of metal ions and radical species in molten salts under radiation environments in order to predict their behavior in a molten salt reactor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform pulse radiolysis experiments on ACER’s two electron accelerators
  • Participate in translating the experimental results into new scientific knowledge through the use of advanced data analysis techniques
  • Manuscript preparation
  • Develop and maintain safe practices and working conditions



Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field
  • Experience with experimental, time-resolved studies of reaction kinetics and mechanisms
  • Experience with experimental data analysis
  • Self-motivated and ability to work in a diverse team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in (or familiarity with) radiation chemistry
  • Experience in pulse radiolysis or laser flash photolysis techniques
  • Experience in elucidating reaction mechanisms from kinetics experiments
  • Familiarity with glove box usage

Other Information

  • Occasional travel to meetings and other MSEE institutions for collaborative work
  • Occasional shift and weekend work
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past 5 years.
