Postdoctoral Research Associate - eRHIC (3 Positions)

Job ID 1609 Date posted 01/24/2019

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The Physics Department is strongly involved in the realization of an Electron Ion Collider (EIC), a major new research facility that will advance the long-term vision for Nuclear Physics. In 2015, the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) gave an Electron-Ion Collider the highest recommendation for new construction after the completion of FRIB in their Long-Range Plan. In July 2018, a report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine commissioned by the US Department of Energy (DOE) positively endorsed the proposal. The realization of such a facility is of highest priority for the QCD community in the US. To realize an EIC at Brookhaven National Laboratory the plan is to add an electron machine to the existing RHIC facility. The BNL Medium Energy group has been playing a major role in developing the EIC science case as well as developing a EIC detector concept and integrating the physics requirements into the EIC Interaction region design.

The Medium Energy Group at BNL’s Physics department has an opening for three (3) Postdoctoral Research Associates. The selected candidates will work on integrating the requirements from the versatile physics program of an EIC into the interaction region, the eRHIC detector and the auxiliary detector designs (i.e. Luminosity Monitor, low Q2 -Tagger, electron polarimetry) and perform studies on beam backgrounds of the physics program. In addition, the Research Associates will contribute to further develop the scientific portfolio of the EIC and analyze polarized proton–proton data from the STAR experiment at RHIC.

Please address questions to: Dr. E.C. Aschenauer (elke@bnl.gov)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in the code development for the eRHIC detector and the interaction region
  • Advance code development to calculate beam backgrounds
  • Present results at meetings and reviews as well as document and publish the results
  • Analyze polarized proton-proton data
  • Work on the scientific program of EIC

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Particle or Nuclear physics
  • Experience with complex detector systems.
  • Understanding of the software development paradigms in the field of nuclear / high-energy physics
  • Solid background in C++ programming in GEANT simulation environment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Primary active experience working on high energy colliders
  • Experience in the FairRoot framework
  • Experience with high energy lepton polarimetry and deep inelastic scattering
  • Experience on simulating beam backgrounds from beam gas events and synchrotron radiation

OTHER INFORMATION:

The position is currently limited to 2 years but can be renewed depending on availability of funds. When applying, please include the name and email addresses of at least 3 references.

BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
