Postdoctoral Research Associate - Electrical Engineering

Job ID 1361 Date posted 07/09/2018

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The Sustainable Energy Technologies (SET) Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a two-year appointment to perform research in the areas of Smart Grid development and grid integration of renewable energy generation.

Applicants for this position must have a PhD in electrical engineering with a strong focus on dynamic control of electric power systems. Experience with nonlinear systems analysis and control synthesis, modeling electrical networks with integrated renewable energy sources using existing analytical tools, and Python and/or Matlab programming is required. Candidates with experience in data analytics and a statistics background, as well as with tools such as PSS/E, PSCad, and OpenDSS are preferred. Proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is also required. Candidates must have good written and oral communication skills, be willing to take direction, and be able to work with others as part of a project team.

The SET Department, in collaboration with others, is performing research in the areas of Smart Grid development and grid integration of renewable energy generation. The goal of our research is to contribute to the development of the next generation Smart Grid, including applications of innovative Smart Microgrid technology that could form the building blocks of the distribution portion of the grid. One project the successful candidate will support is the development of an innovative and tractable method for assessing the stability of both transmission and distribution grids under uncertainties from heterogeneous sources, including Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). In particular, a formal theory will be established for computing the bounds of all possible trajectories and estimating the stability margin for the entire system including the integrated transmission and distribution network. A new open-source tool via reachable set computations will be developed for real-time dynamic analysis and stability margin calculations.

The successful applicant will work with other researchers on the project team in support of various studies and programs, including grid modeling and simulation, data analyses, probabilistic planning, and writing reports on the analysis results.

This position will be in the SET Department, reporting to the Renewable Energy Group Leader, Robert Lofaro.
