Postdoctoral Research Associate - Cosmology & Astrophysics and Quantum Information ScienceJob ID 1990 Date posted 12/13/2019
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
Quantum Information Science (QIS) is an emerging area in the BNL portfolio with considerable investment from the Lab, DOE and NY State over the last two years. The lab has arranged several joint appointments for prominent QIS experts and also hired junior staff with QIS backgrounds. The work is being done on multiple fronts in several departments, employing state-of-the-art equipment. BNL is also participating in several QIS collaborations to build the critical mass of QIS experts and modern technologies across the country.
The Cosmology and Astrophysics Group in the Physics Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position with duration of two years. The successful candidate will work on the intercrossing of optical astronomy, quantum optics and QIS to investigate concepts of optical interferometers connected into a quantum network. More broadly, the project can be described as investigation of quantum sensing over large baselines employing quantum networks and quantum internet to connect them.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform research in the field of quantum optics and quantum networks for the astronomical interferometry project described above and, more generally, in the field of quantum sensing aided by quantum networks.
- Study experimental techniques to demonstrate feasibility and develop algorithms for the data analysis.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ph.D. in Physics or equivalent degree
- Solid background in quantum optics and optical instrumentation
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Programming and data analysis skills (e.g. C/C++, Python)
- The position is for an initial two-year term with the possibility of an extension.
- Domestic and international travel should be expected.
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
Applications should be received by February 15, 2020 to be given fullest consideration. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled and funding is available to fill this position immediately. When electronically applying for this position, please include (in one PDF document) a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publication list, and a brief description of research interests. After electronic submission of application through “BNL Careers,” www.bnl.gov, applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent electronically (preferred) to email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org, or by mail to Dr. Andrei Nomerotski, Physics Department, Building 510A, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY 11973.
