Postdoctoral Research Associate - Angled-Resolved Photoemission SpectroscopyJob ID 1208 Date posted 04/03/2018
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division (CMPMSD) currently has a full time opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Physics) under the direction of Dr. Tonica Valla. CMPMSD has been developing OASIS - a new facility for Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) studies of films and hetero-structures involving transition-metal oxides and other modern materials synthesized in-situ by Molecular Beam Epitaxy. This facility is now operational. The successful candidate will operate the ARPES module on the day-to-day basis; perform the ARPES studies within the OASIS research program and in collaboration with other members of the OASIS team and collaborate on the broader research program of the Electron Spectroscopy Group.
The successful candidate will operate the ARPES module and lead the photoemission studies within the research program of OASIS facility. The successful candidate will participate in the current research program of the Electron Spectroscopy Group on topological insulators and strongly correlated materials using ARPES. This will involve travel to synchrotron facilities and collaboration with other groups. The successful candidate will lead all these activities under the direction of a supervisor.
- Requires a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics or related field
- An excellent understanding of the physics of strongly correlated materials is essential
- Experience with ARPES is required
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* Strong data analysis skills and proven abilities for disseminating research by writing papers and giving academic talks
* Experience in designing vacuum systems
* Experience with MBE and/or STM
