Postdoctoral Research Associate - Solar Fuels Generation

The Chemistry Division conducts basic and applied research in the chemical sciences to address national priorities, with a focus on energy science. Research groups pursue basic research and applications in catalysis and electrocatalysis, artificial photosynthesis, gas and condensed phase chemical physics, and electron and photon-induced molecular processes.

The AP program addresses major issues hindering progress in photo-induced catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide, water splitting and small molecule activation using a coordinated experimental and theoretical approach that pursues fundamental insights into the underlying photochemical processes. Among those research thrusts are: (1) searching for visible-light absorbers including molecular photosentizers and their coupling to electron transfer and/or catalytic processes for solar fuels production.; (2) developing efficient and durable catalysts that can promote multi-electron proton-coupled reactions; and (3) immobilizing catalysts on electrode or semiconductor surfaces adopting water as the target solvent and the source of protons and electrons. The BNL AP group is also a leader in the study of homogeneous photo-and electro-catalysts in solution phase using pulse radiolysis. (see http://www.bnl.gov/chemistry/AP/)



The successful candidate is expected to work on basic research for solar fuels generation in a collaborative environment with a team of scientists including theoretical chemists owing to the interdisciplinary nature of our work.

Candidate will conduct basic research including: design, synthesis and characterization of metal complaex catalysts/photosentizers; characterization of excited-state photophysics and their coupling to electron transfer and/or catalytic processes for solar fuel production; studies of catalytic activity evaluation and mechanistic understanding of catalytic performance including transient spectroscopy and electrochemistry.

Develop collaborations within a research group, while making an individual research contribution. Execute clear written and oral communications of results in scientific journals and meetings.



Required Knowledge, Skillsm, and Abilities:

  • A Ph. D. in inorganic chemistry or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out and communicate research in the field of artificial photosynthesis as evidenced by scientific publications and oral presentations.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: synthesis and handling of air-sensitive compounds, electrochemistry, time-resolved spectroscopy, stopped flow, radiolysis, mechanistic and kinetic studies in solution and at interfaces.
