Postdoctoral Res Assoc. Chemistry

Job ID 1537 Date posted 12/12/2018

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

Bioinspired light-escalated chemistry (BioLEC) is a newly funded Energy Frontiers Research Center (EFRC) led by Princeton University and sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) (http://chemlabs.princeton.edu/biolec/). The goal of BioLEC is to establish a platform for directing difficult chemical transformations that are enabled by combining the energies of multiple photons, for energy-relevant chemicals, fuels and materials.

The Electron- and Photo-Induced Processes (EPIP) Group at BNL will contribute to BioLEC with our expertise in pulse radiolysis and electron transfer theory. We perform pulse radiolysis (PR) experiments using the 10 MeV Laser Electron Accelerator Facility (LEAF) in the Chemistry Division. We rapidly generate excited or charged states with the electron pulse and use transient absorption in the UV/Vis/NearIR/IR to determine their energetics, spectra and transfer rates. Pulse radiolysis will assist in the study and identification of intermediate, non-equilibrium states that form part of photoinduced catalytic processes, but cannot be readily created by other techniques. The ability, using pulse radiolysis, to measure redox potentials of potentially short lived and/or highly energetic species in a range ofenvironments will also be a key contribution the EFRC.

Perform experiments using pulse radiolysis to create and study intermediate oxidized/reduced or excited states of molecular systems to contribute to the mission of the BioLEC EFRC. Will include, but not be limited, to transition metal complexes. The work will be under supervision of Dr. Matthew Bird.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • PhD in physical chemistry, or a related field

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Experience with transition metal complexes, photocatalysis and spectroscopy
  • Prior experience with pulse radiolysis, or other transient absorption spectroscopy techniques and/or electrochemistry
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to coordinate regularly with team members
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past 5 years.
