Postdoctoral in High Performance Computing

Job ID 2747 Date posted 08/30/2021

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

Organizational Overview

The mission of the Computational Science Initiative (CSI - https://www.bnl.gov/compsci/) is to provide the laboratory a wide umbrella for research and development activities that address the computational needs of research programs both inside and outside of BNL, bringing together computer scientists, applied mathematicians and domain scientists to carry out leading edge research, convert research results into practical solutions that advance domain science and provide the necessary computing infrastructure services and training to support efficient operation.

Position Description

The Computational Science Lab’s High Performance Computing group at CSI has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop and evaluate software solutions that can make efficient use of large-scale and novel high performance computing systems, including the upcoming exascale computers.

The position is initially for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and integrate novel computational techniques, including software and numerical methods, that meet the needs of DOE applications, which may include nuclear and high energy physics, chemistry, biology and others.

Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work in a collaborative team with computer scientists, computational scientists, applied mathematicians, and domain scientists
  • Develop quality software for heterogeneous (with compute accelerators such as GPUs, FPGAs etc.)  and many-core architectures
  • Test and document the software to ensure correctness and efficiency
  • Present results at meetings, workshops and conferences
  • Publish findings at conference proceedings and/or academic journals

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Computational Physics/Chemistry, Computer Science/Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated programming skills in C/C++, Python, Fortran or other well-known programming languages.
  • Knowledge of at least one parallel programming models: MPI, OpenMP/OpenACC, CUDA, Kokkos, SyCL/OpenCL, or others.
  • Familiarity with software engineering practices including testing, documentation, source code management and release procedures
  • Good communication skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of experimental high energy physics computational requirements and workflows
  • Experience with one or more of the following: software performance evaluation and optimization; machine learning and data analytics; parallel processing and/or real time programming; GPU programming and languages such as CUDA; HPC computing
  • Experience working on collaborative software projects
  • Experience with performance portable programming models, such as Kokkos, RAJA, or SyCL.
