The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The Collider-Accelerator Department is seeking a full-time, two-year term, Post Doctoral Research Associate in Accelerator Physics to work on strong hadron cooling with micro-bunched electron beams. The candidate will play a central role in the design of such a system for the proposed BNL Electron Ion Collider (EIC). The work will include developing theory and a computer code to model the process and carrying out extensive simulations. The simulations will be carried out to design and model the cooling channel. Additional work involves a pre-conceptual design of the energy recovery linac which provides the electron beam and developing a methodology for implementing the cooling in the actual machine.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the BNL EIC and R&D program on microbunched electron cooling.
- Develop theory and computer code for the purpose listed above.
- Simulate the associated beam dynamics processes
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- PhD in Physics or a related discipline
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with parallel computing
- Familiarity with computer programming languages such as C++ or similar
- Experience in beam dynamics or plasma physics
- Familiarity with PIC codes
This is a two-year term position that offers a comprehensive benefits package.
