BNL Laboratory Protection Division Police Captain is responsible for one of three platoons in the Police Group by providing community-oriented policing, and security for the protection of Brookhaven National Laboratory and DOE interests. Police Captain develops and reviews Standard Operating Procedures.  Also responsible for training rosters, oversees field inspections, and organizes random checks of facilities and areas of security interest. Provides crime statistics, reports, and analysis results to propose changes to management, serves as Field Command Post Supervisor, Watch Commander and Laboratory Emergency Supervisor as required.  The position reports directly to the Police Chief and supervises Police Lieutenants and unionized personnel including Sergeants, Security Police Officers (SPOs) and Security Officers (SO). Familiarity with DOE policy and directives is highly required.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Police Captain serves as the shift Watch Commander.
  • The position reports to the Police Chief and directly supervises Lieutenants, unionized personnel including Sergeants, Security Police Officers and Security Officers.
  • Maintain building relationships and partnerships with all BNL departments/divisions and other federal, local law enforcement agencies (e.g. FBI, Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Police).
  • Responsible for implementing all established security, police plans, and procedures.
  • Responsible for developing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Directs, schedules, and coordinates all community-oriented policing and protection activities.
  • Directs, plans, and implements the protective force in situations requiring police presence.
  • Ensures that required reports, training, and records are completed and maintained.
  • Candidate participates in behavior issues according to BNL discipline policy with labor relations.
  • Additional responsibilities as directed.



Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires the equivalence of an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible related work experience in law enforcement, armed forces security, military police or with public or private sector security organization.
  • In lieu of an Associate’s Degree, the following experience will be accepted: No degree will require a minimum of fourteen (14) years progressively responsible related work experience in security or law enforcement.
  • Strong leadership skills must be demonstrated.
  • Required to have a DOE Q Basic Instructor Certification (BIT)
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work shifts.
  • Required to adjust work schedule for operational needs.
  • Requires the ability to meet all DOE physical fitness, training, certifications and weapons qualifications requirements.
  • Knowledge of tactics, emergency procedures, training techniques, and weapons is required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience at command level

Environmental, Safety, and Health, Requirements:

  • Must respond to emergency situations appropriately, effectively, efficiently, and safely.
  • Must comply with BNL polices, standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Must identify potential hazards, environmental concerns, and unsafe conditions, or practices. Implement controls to minimize risk to both officers and the public.
  • Must adhere to instructions on location warning signs and postings.
