Polarized e-Source Scientist

Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider Accelerator Department has an opening for a two-year term Assistant Physicist to develop and utilize polarization methods to characterize and control the degree and quality of electron beam polarization emitted from cathodes for the development of the e-source for the Electron Ion Collider. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and utilize methods to measure polarization to characterize the degree and quality of electron beam polarization emitted from photo-cathodes
  • Contribute to the commissioning, operation and performance characterization studies of the EIC polarized electron source prototype gun and diagnostic beam line
  • Perform design simulations and optimization as required for polarized e-source development and accelerator design for the EIC preinjector system
  • Develop, utilize and optimize cathode and e-source system cooling methods
  • Perform state of the art studies to advance photocathode gun development

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Physics
  • 4 years full time relevant experience which can include postdoc experience in the following:
    • Demonstrated experience in the design, development and measurement of the polarization of electron beam emitted from strained super-lattice GaAs photo-cathodes
    • Detailed knowledge of and demonstraited experience in electrostatic modeling and design of high voltage components of photo-cathode sources
    • Detailed knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the use of analytical codes for e-beam dynamics modeling and design optimization of e-beam sources, linear accelerators and e-beam transport
    • Detailed knowledge and demonstrated experience with photocathode cooling methods

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with ultra and extreme high vacuum systems
  • Monte Carlo simulation of photo-electron emission from GaAs photocathodes
  • Electron spin polarization measurements using a Mott polarimeter
  • Experience with design and modeling codes such as: AutoCAD, Solidworks, MATLAB, CST Particle Studio, Parmela, Superfish, Opera, Possion, GPT and C++ programming

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Low to moderate heights, less than 5 feet
  • Lifting moderate 15-30 lbs
  • Shift work

  • Initial 2 year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding
