The Omega Group in the Physics Department at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. BNL is the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Project, an ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is designated as part of the U.S. ATLAS Support Center. The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL leads several physics analyses on the ATLAS experiment and has major responsibilities in operations, trigger, and software development. The group has leading roles in the ATLAS Phase-I and HL-LHC upgrade projects (silicon-strip detector, liquid argon calorimeter readout, and trigger/data acquisition electronics) and has strong R&D programs on trigger/data acquisition, high-performance computing, and silicon detectors.
The Omega Group in BNL’s Physics Department has an opening for a Physics Associate II to join the current BNL effort on the ATLAS experiment. The successful candidate will be interested in participating in the LHC scientific program and significant experience in detector development for hadron collider experiments. The selected candidate will participate in studies related to Electroweak and Higgs physics, and take a leading role in the upgrade of the Liquid Argon Calorimeter and Trigger/DAQ and electronics. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participation in the ATLAS scientific program with a focus on trigger and detector performance for Electroweak and Higgs physics.
- Participation in developing, constructing, installing, integrating, and commissioning hardware, firmware, and software for the HL-LHC Upgrade of the ATLAS detector.
- A Bachelor’s degree in particle and nuclear physics or related fields.
- Five (5) years progressively responsible related full time work experience, including supporting research programs, following established methods and standards for investigation and experimentation.
- Experience with data analysis and understanding of statistical techniques.
- Solid foundation in detector system design, detector performance, or trigger systems for high energy or nuclear physics experiments.
- Experience in readout system development of scientific detector systems.
- Experience with computing and software development for high energy or nuclear physics experiments.
- Experience programming FPGAs or heterogeneous devices.
- Understanding of mixed-signal circuits, digital signal processing, and modern circuit components.
- Experience with laboratory equipment, HDL-based design, simulation, and testing.
- Ability to work in a large international collaboration.
- Hands-on problem-solving skills and clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in particle and nuclear physics or related fields.
- Analysis with LHC data based on C/C++ and Python.
- Experience with machine learning techniques and tools.
- Experience programming GPUs, or HPC machines.
- Experience characterizing detector performance with complex circuit boards with multiple high speed (25 Gb/s) optical links with FPGAs and ASICs.
- Understanding of EDA tools for circuit simulation, schematics entry, and PCB layout design.
- Domestic and international travel should be expected.
