Nonproliferation & National Security Department Chair

Brookhaven National laboratory invites applications from a diverse pool of candidates for the position of Chair of the Nonproliferation & National Security Department within the Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science, and Nonproliferation Directorate.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  •  Lead the continued development of nationally and internationally recognized programs in nonproliferation and national security

  • Work with the staff to recruit, mentor, and develop staff members, and maintain a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace supportive of creative scientific research

  • Manage programmatic relationships with the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and industrial collaborators in nonproliferation and national security mission space, which has four primary research activities: detection technologies for nonproliferation and national security, nonproliferation policy, training of nonproliferation workforce, and project/program management

  • Develop a scientific vision and decadal-scale strategic business plan for the Department appropriate for a leading National Laboratory, leveraging the unique capabilities and facilities at BNL and within DOE. Lead efforts to secure funding to bring the vision to light and execute the strategic plan, with the overarching goal to develop premier nonproliferation and national security research programs consistent with the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE) and position the Department to take on new challenges

  • Build strategic partnerships inside and outside BNL that significantly enhance the responsiveness, competitiveness, productivity and impact of the department R&D efforts, resulting in a sustainable growth in both the level and scope of department funding by DOE and other funding agencies

  • Represent the Department in BNL deliberations on funding, structure, and other topics that affect the success of the Department 

  • Manage the NN Department to ensure safe and secure operations 

  • Engage with higher education institutions in developing next-generation workforce for nonproliferation and national security

  • Contribute to ongoing departmental scientific research by being an active and independent scientist or engineer

Position Requirements:

  • Masters degree in nuclear engineering, physics, international relations, nuclear security, or closely related fields

  • Recognized expertise in nonproliferation, arms control, nuclear security, and international safeguards

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in leading scientific research and development in nonproliferation and national security to include at least 5 years managing scientific, technical, and support professionals and programmatic funding stewardship with a record of sustaining incremental research funding.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the development of staff within the framework of diversity, equity, and inclusion as the path to excellence

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and clear and concise oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated proficient project/program management skills

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE-Q security clearance

  • A record of scientific accomplishment demonstrated by a record of publications in premier peer-reviewed journals

  • Experience working with federal agencies that support national security and/or nuclear safeguards or nonproliferation work

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, physics, international relations, nuclear security, or closely related fields

  • Detailed knowledge of DOE NNSA, DoD, and other government R&D programs and funding structures related to nonproliferation, arms control and nuclear security

  • Active research programs relevant to nonproliferation and national security and funded by U.S. federal agencies

Other Information:

  • This is an on-site position eligible for consideration of flexible work arrangement (hybrid/ telework) at the discretion of the ALD of EBNN.

  • Periodic International and domestic travel ~20%

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $215900 - $301933 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
