Lead Engineer, Pulsed Power Group, EIC

Job ID 2421 Date posted 11/17/2020

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

The Lead Engineer, Pulsed Power Group, supervises, coordinates and directs the work of electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, scientific staff, controls engineers, designers, and technicians developing, designing, procuring, testing, and installing pulsed power supplies and devices for the EIC.  These systems provide fast beam injection and extraction for the EIC Rapid Cycling Synchrotron, Electron Storage Ring, and Hadron Ring, serving both operational and key machine protection functions.  This position will have the lead role with other high-level project staff in defining pulsed power system configurations to meet system requirements.  We seek an individual with a background in high voltage pulsed power and power electronics to lead development of these high voltage, high current pulsed power systems.

The position is also the cost account manager for EIC pulsed power systems and must collaborate with the EIC project management team documenting and developing plans, schedules, and cost, tracking and managing execution, and monitoring and reacting to project risks and scope adjustments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Power Supply Systems Group Leader, accelerator physicists, and EIC system managers and engineers to develop, define, and document detailed requirements and specifications for pulsed power systems
  • Establish the team that will provide the pulsed power systems for the EIC project
  • The team will consist of direct reports, EIC matrixed support, support provided by other BNL departments via Memorandum of Understandings, and possible support from similar groups at partner laboratories and institutions
  • Lead, coordinate, and supervise the team to deliver EIC pulsed power systems and components from initial concept through engineering analysis, detailed electrical, electronic and mechanical design, 3D magnetic and electrical field modeling and analysis, design, system electrical, mechanical, and controls integration, detailed fabrication specifications and drawings, design and safety reviews, purchase documentation, vendor oversight, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning
  • Manage and oversee all pulsed power system projects
  • Develop project plans defining and documenting scope, required labor and material resources, schedules, and procurement plans.  Establish milestones and maintain a current detailed schedule
  • Track and report on these projects through to completion
  • Ensure that pulsed power systems and components have well defined specifications for support systems: electrical power, water cooling, HVAC, compressed air, and controls and that they are communicated with the responsible support groups
  • Support project interface management with other accelerator systems to resolve technical conflicts for beamline position, support building space, cable tray space, and other infrastructure systems
  • Support project interface management to resolve conflicts for technician support, inspection and assembly facilities, and storage facilities. This includes planning and scheduling technical support, planning and defining technical support space and storage space needs at BNL, and planning and scheduling pulsed power system installation
  • Identify areas where research and development are required.
  • Prepare an R&D plan and execute the R&D project plan after review and approval
  • Manage configuration control activities.  Perform cost and schedule evaluations as needed throughout the project to determine and maintain Estimates to Complete.  Plan, execute, and track all system procurements
  • Ensure that all work is planned and executed in accordance with BNL and EIC ES&H policy and procedures.
  • Maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration, and respect for all.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • BS in Engineering or Physics
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant technical experience that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of high voltage pulsed power supplies, power electronics, and high voltage pulsed power devices and systems. Included in the experience base, must be five (5) years of experience on creative engineering projects (collaborating with a team to develop and build unique scientific equipment) as well as management and supervisory experience of an engineering and/or technical staff
  • Experience with particle accelerator systems and components working with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop, design, build, and commission similar systems
  • Experience with pulse forming networks, high voltage / high current modulators including solid state and vacuum tube switching devices
