Organizational Overview

Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) is seeking an internationally recognized science leader with a demonstrated record of high achievement in leading-edge scientific research and management to serve as the Director of Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Brookhaven Lab delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. One of 10 national labs primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science, Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and 75 years of pioneering research.

The Laboratory's 2,600-plus staff members lead and support diverse research teams that advance DOE’s missions, addressing the nation’s energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions. Brookhaven Lab’s current initiatives include nuclear science, energy science, data science, particle physics, accelerator science and technology, quantitative plant science, and quantum information science.

Brookhaven Lab staff build and operate unique research facilities and tools used by interdisciplinary teams of scientists from Brookhaven and other national labs, academia, and industry. These facilities include the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider—the only operating particle collider in the U.S.; the National Synchrotron Light Source II—one of the brightest sources of light on the planet; the Center for Functional Nanomaterials; and the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory.

In fiscal year 2021, the Laboratory attracted 4,400 facility users and guest researchers from across the U.S. and from countries around the world. The Laboratory also offers robust STEM education and workforce development programs that serve more than 30,000 students and teachers annually.

The Laboratory Director reports to the Board of Directors of Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) and serves as Brookhaven Lab’s primary liaison to the DOE’s Office of Science. The Laboratory Director oversees an annual budget of more than $700 million from the DOE and other governmental agencies. The Laboratory Director also leads the Lab’s Policy Council, the senior management team that establishes strategies to ensure safe and productive pursuit of the Laboratory’s multiple scientific missions and simultaneous excellence in Science & Technology, Operations, and Community Relations.

The Laboratory Director works closely with the BSA Board and its committees, the National Laboratory Directors’ Council, the DOE, elected representatives on the local, state, and federal levels, and local community leaders to ensure the success of the Lab’s mission and strategy.

Position Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspire and engage the Laboratory and its regional, national, and international partners with an exciting vision for the future
  • Lead the Brookhaven Lab community in formulating and implementing a strategic vision to deliver on the outcomes that are embedded in the Lab’s mission.  This includes providing leadership that enables the identification and pursuit of new opportunities in areas where the Lab can leverage its unique and evolving scientific expertise and capabilities to enhance DOE’s broader missions.
  • Enhance cooperation and collaboration in mutually beneficial ways across the Lab and other constituents and stakeholders, including DOE and its laboratories, affiliated universities, BSA partners, and the region.
  • Direct the Laboratory’s approach to significant business opportunities and challenges that can include:
  • Sustaining and expanding funding for national science goals
  • Identifying and funding programs to sustain the site, including investing in new science facilities and infrastructure upgrades
  • Continuing to ensure the Lab is operating in a cost-effective manner
  • Balancing investment decisions to assure a vibrant future for the Laboratory
  • Set expectations for institutional priorities, performance, and outcomes.
  • Lead the formulation and implementation of infrastructure improvement strategies.
  • Attract, develop, and retain the highest quality diverse scientific, managerial, and professional leadership to ensure a future talent pipeline.  Delegate responsibility and authority, set goals for, and evaluate the performance of the senior leadership team.

Position Requirements

Professional and Personal Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in relevant field; demonstrated track record of scientific achievement and strong credentials
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, including creating a compelling vision and associated strategy for a complex research organization and gaining commitment to the strategy from internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to the development of staff and leadership within the framework of diversity, equity, and inclusion as the path to excellence
  • Record of success in achieving scientific, operational, and strategic objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve excellence in operations to include safety, security, facility management, financial operations, environmental management, and information systems management
  • Record of ability to implement strategy, align staff and resources to achieve goals and to build and direct diverse, multidisciplinary organizations
  • Record of exceptional leadership and management development and accomplishment, particularly in a DOE national laboratory or other complex research setting
  • Strong leadership presence, including exceptional communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire others to action. Willingness and ability to engage with staff at all levels.
  • Strong self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses—with appropriate modesty. Ability to speak openly and honestly about difficult issues. A sense of humor.
  • Ability to work in a team setting, both as a leader and as a member—especially with both the Deputy Directors for Science and Technology and Operations, as well as with the members of the Policy Council
  • Outstanding working knowledge of DOE missions, organizations, structures and programs; demonstrated record of obtaining funding from state and federal agencies (e.g., Department of Energy (DOE), National Institute of Health (NIH), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) 
  • Ability to build successful relationships with key constituents, including elected officials, political appointees, government and other funding sponsors, peers, and partners
  • Ability to develop industrial relationships for advanced technology development and deployment. Working knowledge of industry and commercial practices in advanced research and partnering
  • National perspective of the rapidly changing research environment, including new or developing opportunities, and the skills to align the Lab accordingly
  • Genuine passion and excitement about Brookhaven National Laboratory and the role
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance
