Group Leader Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and SpectroscopyJob ID 1786 Date posted 06/07/2019
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The Division of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science (CMPMS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking an outstanding scientist to conduct research on quantum materials and to lead the scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STMS) group. The group participates in OASIS, a leading experimental capability of the Division in which an oxide MBE system is seamlessly integrated with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy apparatuses.
The successful candidate will join the interdisciplinary and distinguished team of scientists that form the Division, devoted to the discovery, synthesis, advanced characterization, and elucidation of the properties of quantum materials. The main responsibilities of the new group leader will be: developing the scientific directions of the STMS program; conducting impactful research in topics aligned with the Division’s strategic plan, often in collaboration with other scientists in the Division; advancing the state-of-the-art of instrumentation and/or experimental techniques in STMS; managing the group’s permanent staff and postdocs; and working collegially with the other leaders in the Division to fulfill its mission.
- PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry, or related field
- Experience in STMS of at least ten years after completion of the PhD degree
- Outstanding record of scientific achievements
- Excellent communications, interpersonal and team-building skills
- Collaborative approach to research are essential
- Experience in managing a thriving research group is highly desirable
