Engineer - Group Leader Vacuum Systems

Job ID 2223 Date posted 06/10/2020

Brookhaven National Laboratory ( delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department;of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

This position will be the cost account manager for EIC vacuum systems and will collaborate with the EIC project management team, documenting and developing plans, schedules, and cost, tracking and managing execution, and monitoring and reacting to project risks, and scope adjustments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish the team that will provide the vacuum system support for the EIC project.  Lead, coordinate, and supervise the team to deliver EIC accelerator vacuum systems and components from initial concept through engineering analysis, detailed 3D modeling, design, system mechanical and vacuum controls integration, design and safety reviews, purchase documentation and fabrication drawings, fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with Accelerator Physicists and EIC System Managers to develop, document, and maintain definitions, design standards, preparation and quality standards for all in vacuum accelerator system components.  You or your team designate(s) shall participate in design reviews, support and oversee vacuum system component preparation, assembly, and installation in order to maintain standards.
  • Manage and oversee all EIC vacuum system and component projects and develop project plans including defining and documenting scope, required labor and material resources, schedules, procurement plans.  Establish milestones and maintain a current detailed schedule.  Track and report on these projects through to completion.
  • Identify areas where vacuum research and development is required.  Prepare an R&D plan and execute the R&D project after review and approval.
