The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Collider Electrical Power Supply group has two openings for a Technical Specialist or Senior Technical Specialist- Electrical to construct, install and maintain power supply systems and associated complex support equipment. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assembly, maintenance, repair and operation of power supplies and analog/ digital electronics. Troubleshoot and repair electronic circuits, analog and digital and various complex electrical systems, mechanical construction, and wiring for electronic chassis, assemblies and printed circuit boards
Build prototype circuits from schematics or sketches
Create and maintain documentation using any combination of MS programs and AutoCad
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
BS degree in a technical field or a Technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or a Technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or 6 years relevant work experience.
Must be familiar with printed circuit board assembly, wiring and construction techniques. Surface mount technology would be helpful.
Must have excellent soldering skills
Must be able to operate vans and pickup vehicles
High degree of proficiency in the use of hand tools and electronic test instruments
The ability to work from drawings, schematics and verbal instructions
Experience in the use of electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, function generators, and spectrum analyzers
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic experience with computers and software such as Excel, Word, Auto Cad and plc programing languages.
Experience with maintenance and repair of high power, power supplies, preferred
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs
Must be able to work from ladders at 6 feet
Other Information:
Must be available for emergency call in 24/7 and possible shift work if needed as operational and department demands
Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
Must have a valid driver’s license
This is a fully onsite position located at BNL

Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
