The STAR Group in the Physics Department at BNL performs research using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The STAR experiment consists of several types of detectors, each specializing in detecting certain types of particles or characterizing their motion. The detectors work together in an advanced data acquisition and subsequent physics analysis that allows final statements to be made about the collision. The STAR group works with collaborators from around the world to share science data and shape the scientific program.
BNL’s STAR Group seeks an experienced Electronics Design Engineer to plan, design, develop, and use new or improved engineering techniques and equipment to provide solutions and complete technical research projects. In this role, you will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and supervise a small technical staff.
In the role of Electronics Engineer, you will:
- Design FPGA / CPLD based logic, including functional and timing
- Develop new electronics for upgrades to the STAR Experiment
- Develop technical procedures
- Provide budgetary cost analysis and performance feedback for annual operations needs and project requirements
You are qualified for this role if you have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
- 7+ years of relevant experience
- Expertise in design analysis tools and laboratory measurement techniques
- Familiarity with OrCad Capture, PADS Power PCB, CAM 350, and/or AutoCAD design tools
- Experience with MS Project Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills; ability to develop effective technical procedures
This position requires occasional moderate lifting (less than 30lbs), climbing or work at heights above 5’, ability to work in confined space, use powered hand tools, and work protracted or irregular hours.
