Organizational Overview
The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opportunity in the Accelerator Operations Support Group for an Electro-Mechanical Technician. Under minimum supervision, you will perform semi-routine technical support functions typically involved with the fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and operation of equipment or facilities. Work assignments are performed in accordance with general instructions, specific work plans and established procedures. Duties require knowledge of practical principles of mechanics and electronics and include removal of legacy and installation of new accelerator components and infrastructure, installation of scientific apparatus and equipment, and assisting mechanical, electrical and technical efforts at C-AD and Nuclear & Particle Physics (NPP). This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist technicians and engineers in the development, fabrication, testing, installation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems that support projects at CAD and NPP, including infrastructure, operations and system upgrades.
  • Work will include the installation and termination of cables used for particle accelerator systems, including high-current/high voltage copper, multi-strand and co-axial instrumentation, fiber optic, and RF helix cable, as well as the installations of all weight cables to distances several thousand feet.

Position Requirements

  • Requires an associate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience
  • Two (2) years full-time relevant work experience, or a BS in a technical field
  • Previous experience that demonstrates the ability to follow procedures to perform technical work assignments
  • Experience and ability to work independently and as a  member of the cable puller team
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Ability to work overtime and or shifted hours as required
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience performing large scale installation and termination of scientific apparatus
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office, Adobe, Computer-Aided Design programs (such as AutoCAD)
  • Previous work assisting major project management

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to climb ladders and sloping terrain and to perform other physical activity
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to work with confidence at heights that can exceed thirty feet
