Organizational Overview
The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for an Ion Source Technician in the Pre-injector Group. In this role you will maintain and operate the Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) used for beam injection for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL).  You will also participate in the development of projects for the EBIS and other ion sources. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operation of the (EBIS) Electron Beam Ion Source, adjusting parameters to optimize beam, communicating with Main Control Room on beam delivery, and routine equipment checks and maintenance.
  • Assembly and repair of related components and associated systems and subsystems.  This includes trouble shooting and repair of power supplies, assembly of source components, wiring and installation of components and installation of vacuum equipment.
  • Participate in development and improvement projects for ion sources and other systems.  Assembly of components, testing and operation of new ion sources and systems.

Position Requirements

  • Equivalence of a technical institute, military technical school, or associate degree in a related scientific or technical field
  • A minimum of four (4) years of full-time relevant work experience to include maintaining and troubleshooting complex electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Understanding of analog and digital circuits
  • Experience using various electronics equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal and pulse generators
  • Electronics troubleshooting to the component level, including op-amps, logic gates, transistors
  • Experience soldering and electrical repairs
  • Basic machine shop tools operation
  • The ability to work from electronic schematics
  • Must be available for off hours call in as required

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with electronic system chassis assembly work
  • Familiarity with high voltage/high current, radiofrequency and vacuum systems

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to lift (up to) 50 pounds, to climb a ladder, and work at heights of up to five feet
  • Ability to work inside a 5 Gauss magnetic field

  • Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
