Organizational Overview
NSLS-II RF group designs, fabricates and maintains multiple Radio Frequency (RF) systems including 500MHz and 3GHz klystrons, inductive output tubes, a 300kW solid state amplifier, switching power supplies. The group also assembles and operates superconducting RF cavities and a liquid helium cryogenic plant.
Position Description
This position is for an electro-mechanical technician. The successful candidate must demonstrate expertise in the fabrication, troubleshooting and operations of electro-mechanical systems. Must be able to troubleshoot complex systems to diagnose problems and repair. Working with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technicians, the electro/mechanical technician will be responsible for developing and maintaining Radio Frequency transmitters, similar to high power commercial broadcast systems. The successful candidate will be trained in a variety of highly complex systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoot complex systems to diagnose and repair, down to subsystem and component level.
- Read and understand electrical and mechanical drawings to support the development and maintenance of radio frequency transmitters.
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a minimum of Associates degree in electronics or equivalent and 6 years of experience.
- Strong background in electro-mechanical systems.
- Demonstrated mechanical skills and knowledge of machine hop practices.
- Strong organization and documentation skills.
- Self-motivated with good workmanship.
- Strong safety ethic and knowledge of safe work practices in complex systems.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelors’ degree in electronics or engineering technology
- Familiar with computer aid design (CAD) software (OrCAD, AutoCAD, etc.)
- Experience with one or more of the following systems:
- Electric motor/pump systems
- Large air compressors
- Instrumentation and SIEMENS Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Essential functions; lifting of 30 pounds, continuous walking / standing, climb a ladder and work at heights up to 30 feet.
