Electrical Technician

The National Synchrotron Light Source is a state-of-the-art, medium-energy (3-billion-electron-volt, or GeV) electron storage ring that produces x-rays up to 10,000 times brighter than the NSLS. The mission of the National Synchrotron Light Source is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine, materials and chemical sciences, geosciences and environmental sciences, and nanoscience. To support this program, the NSLSII must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate and focus electron and X-ray beams. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the NSLSII scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The NSLSII supports an international user community of over 2,200 researchers from 400 universities. The NSLSII performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.


Position Description

NSLS-II Electrical Engineering Technical Support Group has an opening for a 2-year term electrical technician. The successful candidate must demonstrate expertise in the fabrication, installation, troubleshooting, and operations of electrical systems. Must be able to troubleshoot electrical systems to diagnose problems and repair. This position will require close interaction with technicians and engineers.  A main task will be to assemble and test power supply and personnel protection system (PPS) subassemblies. Tasking will also include cable pulling and technical support for development projects. This position will rotate among several accelerator groups to provide electrical technician support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for power supplies and personnel protection systems (PPS)

  • Proficient with schematics and electrical/mechanical assembly drawings

  • Troubleshoot electrical systems to diagnose and repair, down to subsystem and component level

  • Cable pulling and cable termination

  • Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • a technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL and 2 years of relevant work experience OR;

    • a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 3 years of relevant work experience OR:

    • 4 years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience with fabrication, assembly, wiring, and testing electronic systems

  • Use of test and measurement equipment, including electrical multi-meter and oscilloscope

  • Troubleshooting skills in digital and analog circuits

  • Strong organization and documentation skills

  • Self-motivated with good workmanship

  • Strong safety ethic and knowledge of safe work practices in complex systems

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Electrical Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) experience

  • Preventative maintenance experience

  • Cable termination experience

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds

  • Continuous walking / standing

  • Must be able to climb a ladder and work at heights up to 10 feet

  • Ability to speak, hear and understand speech

  • Good vision and hand dexterity
