Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening in the Linac/Booster/AGS Power Supply Group for an electrical engineer. The electrical engineer will be trained to maintain, upgrade and support current regulated power supplies, powering electro-magnets at Linac, Booster and AGS particle accelerators.. These power supplies will be ranging in current from +/-10 Amps, all the way to 5500 Amps, and their voltage will be ranging from +/-20 Volts up to +/-10,000 volts. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and upgrade the interfaced PLC (Programmable Logic Controler) systems
  • Understand the details of analog operational amplifiers to troubleshoot any issues down to a component level. Digital electronics are also involved regarding interlocks or interlock interfaces with the PLC’s and our control system
  • Responsible for upgrading various types of power supplies. Including re-designing regulators, interlock systems and interfacing to our control system
  • Build and evaluate prototypes and models, construct and test systems/equipment, and conduct acceptance tests. May propose upgrades or improvements of the power supplies
  • Prepare for preliminary design reviews, review engineering specifications, present reports and procures power supplies
  • Responsible for the ownership of power supplies to ensure a smooth operation
  • Must have the ability to work with some independence and report to senior engineering and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support

Position Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor’s  Degree in Electrical Engineering with specific knowledge in power electronics and feedback control systems
  • Minimum three (3) years full time relevant progressively responsible related work experience
  • Strong understanding of power electronics
  • In-depth knowledge of analog amplifiers and analog and digital electronics
  • Knowledge of or ability to complete training in programming of PLC’s and understanding of essentials of relay logic
  • Clear and concise written and verbal skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office and MS Excel

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, PLC programming
  • Very knowledgeable to troubleshoot and fix analog and digital electronics down to the component level

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Incumbent will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker and may be required to work in Radiation areas
  • Individual may be required to climb ladders and/or work in Confined Spaces

OTHER INFORMATION:
  • Valid Drivers’ License
  • Dedicated and very focused individual, may be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support mission-critical projects
