Electrical Engineer Pulsed Power Systems

Brookhaven National Laboratory is entering an exciting new chapter with one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II ) enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis.

This facility is open to users from academia and industry and its operations are at a time when the world enters a new era with a global economy fueled largely by scientific discoveries and technological innovations. NSLS-II provides the research tools needed to foster new discoveries and create breakthroughs in critical areas such as energy security, environment, and human health.



Electrical Engineer possessing the ability to utilize new or improved engineering techniques and procedures to design, troubleshoot and maintain pulse power supply systems and controls used in particle accelerator applications. These systems use high current and voltage devices such as thyatrons, IGBT’s and SCR’s to produce nano second range pulses powering  magnetic devices that steer electron beams. The control of the power supplies incorporate precision analog and digitial archetecure and low jitter nanosecond timing circuitry. The candidate will report to the head of the Electrical Engineering Group.



Essential Duties:

  • Design of high speed and current pulse forming networks.
  • Network simulation and measurement of magnetic performance and stability using precision techniques.
  • Participate in developing electrical safety procedures for high voltage, current and/or energy storage devices and incorporate safety culture in daily work. 

Qualifications Required:

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 3 years of experience in design and testing complex analog and or digital control systems.
  • Experience using electronic circuit analysis software for high speed, high current pulse forming networks and analog / digital circuits.
  • Experience in the selection of the hardware required for pulsed power systems.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and interact with a diverse group of scientist and technical staff.
  • Experience with high voltage and electrical safety practices.
  • Experienced in the measurement of pulsed power supplies and precision pulsed magnetic measurement techniques.  
  • Experience in designing the mechanical layout of pulsed power systems and packaging. 

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Experience in design, development of complex precision analog and digital control systems for use on high voltage power supplies.
  • Knowledge in stability criteria as it pertains to high voltage power supply controls.
  • Knowledge of electrical system used in a particle accelerator.
  • Technical writing skills and the use of spreadsheets.
