Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for an Associate Staff Engineer/Staff Engineer II within the Controls Hardware group.  Position requires working with other engineers, physicists, and technicians to operate RHIC and other accelerator-based experiments at BNL.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing, integrating, and maintaining electronic equipment for device control, timing distribution, and data collection throughout the accelerator complex. This position will have a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and development of digital/analog hardware sub-systems as specified/required
  • Participate in digital/analog circuit board design, test, and integration
  • Debug and maintain the repair of existing hardware
  • Work with high level software programmers to develop support code and applications
  • Interface with technical experts from other groups to facilitate operations
  • Work with other engineers and technicians to achieve group goals

Position Requirements

  • BS/BE degree in engineering discipline or closely related field of study
  • Digital design experience
  • Working knowledge of A-to-D and D-to-A converters
  • Working knowledge of microprocessors
  • Ability to create and understand schematics
  • FPGA design and simulation experience
  • VHDL or Verilog  experience
  • Able to use Xilinx ISE, Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus, or similar tool suites
  • Knowledge of at least one higher level programming language (Python, C++, etc)
  • Able to use lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, analyzers, etc.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience writing and understanding technical specifications and other technical documents
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Capable of working in a team-oriented environment
  • Willing to pro-actively obtain system requirements from users to develop system requirements
  • Able to work effectively with a minimum of supervision
  • Must be able to work in an environment where design goals can change frequently
  • Must be willing to accommodate the operational requirements of the department
  • Must have a natural curiosity and a willingness to learn

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum three (3) years full-time progressively responsible related work experience
  • PC layout design
  • Designing circuitry around FPGAs
  • Knowledgeable with ethernet communications (settings, protocols, diagnostics, etc.)
  • Familiarity with revision control
  • Comfortable with LINUX/UNIX
  • Hands-on troubleshooting skills
  • Familiarity with system integration
  • Experience using FPGA IP cores
  • Xilinx ZYNQ experience
  • Some knowledge of Fiber Optic data transceivers
  • Some knowledge of serial device communication (RS-232, RS-485, ModBus)
  • Some knowledge of GPIB communication
  • VME bus or similar parallel bus experience
  • LabView programming

  • Arm/Hand dexterity


  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
