Control Systems Group Leader

Job ID 2521 Date posted 03/10/2021

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

The EIC Controls Systems Group Leader is responsible for ensuring delivery of the EIC Controls Systems in accordance with project scope, schedule and cost.   Manages a team which may include Scientists, Engineers, IT staff, and Technicians, matrixed staff, and contractors, and coordinates efforts with similar groups at partner laboratories and institutions.

The EIC will comprise three large accelerators and storage rings, collocated in the existing 3.8 km RHIC tunnel, along with the associated hadron and electron injector complexes.  The operating modes of this facility will be dynamic and frequently changing, requiring a Control System with high performance, flexibility, and reliability which effectively integrates, controls, synchronizes and monitors the many technical subsystems across all the machines.  The Control System must also provide a powerful and flexible interface for Main Control Room operations staff, accelerator physicists and technical system experts to efficiently and effectively interact with any and all subsystems to provide day to day operational configuration, control, monitoring and data analysis as well as well troubleshooting, post-mortem failure analysis, accelerator and subsystem development, failure prediction, and standard software hooks for third party tools.

The EIC Controls Systems Group scope includes engineering design, engineering specifications, control and interface documents, design packages, SOWs, procurements, construction and acceptance testing for all EIC accelerator Control Systems and components. Control Systems comprise the Controls System core servers, core software and network, hardware and software interfaces to the accelerator technical system components, high level application software, UIs and displays, logging and archiving systems, and software development tool chains.  Controls Systems also integrates the Personnel Protection Systems and Machine Protection Systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working with Accelerator Physicists, EIC System Managers and technical system leads, develop and define scope for all EIC Controls Systems including:
    • Definition and specification of EIC Controls System functionality and performance.
    • Deliverables for all phases of the project work – hardware and software design, R&D, prototypes and first articles, construction, incoming inspection and test, hardware and software validation, installation, integrated system testing and commissioning.
  • Identify, recruit and assemble the members of the group necessary to execute the defined scope.
  • Coordinate with other groups to ensure efficient and accurate communication of Control System parameters and requirements which impact their scope.
  • Develop detailed cost and schedule estimates for the labor and material resources required to deliver defined scope.
  • Detail the infrastructure and installation requirements necessary to support the operation of the controls systems.
  • Execute the defined Controls system scope within the project cost and schedule by:
    • Designate and oversee Control Account Managers (CAMs) to manage areas of assigned scope.
    • Delivery of systems which provide the specified functionality and performance.
    • Tracking and maintaining the detailed schedule and cost.
    • Tracking and executing all procurements with vendors and partner labs.
    • Generating performance data and reports, tracking and reporting on any corrective action items.
    • Perform cost and schedule evaluations as appropriate throughout the project to determine Estimates to Complete.
  • Assign and supervise the work of all group members and ensuring that they have the necessary qualifications, skills, experience and resources to deliver the Controls System scope and to carry out all work safely and professionally.
  • Direct configuration management activities.
  • Maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration and respect for all.
