Bio-imaging Team Scientific AssociateJob ID 1922 Date posted 11/27/2019
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is entering an exciting new chapter with one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis.
The NSLS-II seeks a motivated Science Associate for the Bio-imaging team. The position is funded through the Center for Biomolecular Structure (CMBS), a Department of Energy, Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research (DOE-BER)- and NIH-sponsored user facility located at the NSLS-II.
The candidate will work within the NSLS-II’s Imaging and Microscopy Program (IMP) on end station developments to enable high-quality Bio-imaging at the X-ray Fluorescence Microprobe (XFM) and other IMP beamlines. Examples include but are not limited to cryogenic sample handling and workflows for cryo-XRF, instrumentation development to enable 3-D XRF imaging by confocal and/or tomographic modalities, control system software and hardware support for Bio-imaging experiments. The selected candidate will also assist beamline scientists, engineers and technicians with the maintenance, operation and improvement of the IMP beamlines.
- Work as member of a team to conduct experimental programs in Bio-imaging at NSLS-II
- Assist beamline staff with maintenance, operation and improvement of the IMP beamlines (work includes installation, testing, commissioning, and upgrading of beamline instrumentation)
- Provide support at the X-ray Fluorescence Microprobe (XFM) beamline for Bio-imaging experiments
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology or related field
- Experience at scientific user facility
- Entry to mid-level programming skills (preferably Python)
- Demonstrated experience with Inventor, CAD or other design software
- Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff and users
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (one or more of the following):
- Experience with Control System Studio (CSS) or other display manager software
- Demonstrated experience with 3-D printing projects
- Hands-on experience with motion controls and/or cabling for motorized stages
