Beamline Scientist, Inner Shell Spectroscopy

Job ID 1825 Date posted 09/13/2019

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking exceptional candidates for the beamline scientist position for the Inner-Shell Spectroscopy (ISS) beamline. A part of the Hard X-ray Spectroscopy Program at NSLS-II, the ISS beamline is a high-flux, fast-scanning damping wiggler spectroscopy beamline, with in situ and operando instrumentation integrated in the beamline architecture and data acquisition system. ISS beamline offers world-class capabilities for studying the complex science of energy conversion and storage, including batteries, fuel cells, heterogeneous and electro-catalysts.

Working together with the ISS lead beamline scientist, the successful candidate will support the high-volume user program at ISS. The candidate will be encouraged to develop opportunities for internal and external scientific collaborations that leverage the unique capabilities of the beamline. He/She will design and build new beamline instrumentation, with an emphasis on high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The candidate’s responsibilities will also include development of sample handling automation, design of complex operando experiments, and development of streamlined data-processing protocols using high-performance computing.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience applying X-ray spectroscopy to high-impact science, demonstrated by a strong publication record.
  • Experience with computational X-ray spectral modelling and/or high throughput spectral analysis
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • The ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prior experience in the design, installation, commissioning and/or operation of a synchrotron radiation beamline.
  • At least three years prior experience in spectroscopy data acquisition and analysis.
  • Experience with X-ray optics or detectors.
  • Experience with Python or similar programming language.

Additional Information: The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level depending on depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills she or he brings to the position.
