Associate Director, Accelerator Test Facility (Accelerator/Laser Scientist)
Job ID 1841Date posted 08/12/2019
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) is the flagship user facility for DOE’s Accelerator Stewardship Program and serves as a focal point for the laboratory’s advanced Accelerator Science and Technology efforts that address a broad variety of stakeholder needs. These range from the support of basic accelerator and laser science research to advanced technology development and electron irradiation capabilities. The ATF supports three major capabilities for users: a high brightness electron beam linac with associated user beamlines; a state-of-the-art long wavelength infrared carbon dioxide laser system; and a developmental Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) facility for materials science research. A sophisticated suite of diagnostics is available for each of these capabilities. The ATF’s high brightness electron beam and laser capabilities can be used individually or in combination – a unique element of the ATF’s scientific reach. The facility is aggressively pursuing advances in each of its capabilities to ensure continued ATF leadership in advanced accelerator R&D into the future.
The ATF is part of Brookhaven’s Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD), whose mission is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks an accelerator OR laser scientist with a distinguished record of research to serve as the Accelerator Test Facility Associate Director to help support and direct the scientific and user mission of the ATF. The Associate Director will play a central role in defining the scientific vision for the facility, oversee user operations at the facility, serve as an interface to the advanced accelerator and laser communities, and contribute to the facility’s research and development efforts. The selected candidate will also be expected to participate in the broader accelerator science and technology efforts at the laboratory.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work closely with the ATF Director and Facility Scientist to:
Develop and maintain a compelling scientific vision and program for the facility
Organize and execute the ATF user program that adheres to the laboratory’s ESH and DOE’s Accelerator Conduct of Operations policies
Coordinate ongoing facility upgrades
Attract, retain and foster the development of a team of advanced accelerator and laser experts to ensure delivery of a world-class user program
Support collaborative research efforts in advanced accelerator and laser technology within the laboratory and with outside collaborators
Communicate the facility’s science vision, research efforts, and operating model to a broad group of stakeholders including BNL management, the Department of Energy, the advanced accelerator community, and the ATF’s advisory committees
Ph.D. degree in Physics or related discipline, with a concentration in lasers or beam physics
Several years’ experience working in an experimental laboratory
Familiarity with DOE programs and/or DOE Office of Science National Laboratories or other Federal entities
A significant record of research and publications pertaining to laser and/or particle accelerator systems
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collegial relationships and collaborate with all levels of staff within the Laboratory in particular with the Senior Leadership
Strong decision-making, problem solving and strategic thinking skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience managing DOE-funded programs or projects
An internationally recognized research program having significant overlap with one or more of the ATF research capabilities
Moderate domestic and international travel
