Assistant ScientistJob ID 1734 Date posted 10/09/2019
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) designs, builds, and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators world-wide. The SMD also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and also provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide.
The Superconducting Magnet Division (https://www.bnl.gov/magnets/) has an opening for an Assistant Scientist, for an initial two-year term appointment, to advance superconducting magnet technology. The successful candidate will participate in either (a) developing magnet designs by advancing existing and exploring new or (b) magnet technologies, including a variety of magnet measurements techniques, or both. BNL has a strong history in developing magnet technology using conventional Low Temperature Superconductors (LTS) and rapidly progressing High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) for a variety of applications. Some of the activities are listed at: https://www.bnl.gov/magnets/Staff/Gupta/default.htm. Specific accelerator magnet programs include, magnets for the proposed Electron Ion Collider (EIC), magnets for LHC high luminosity upgrade and high field magnets for a future circular collider. BNL is also embarking on many innovative magnet programs for other applications of superconducting magnets such as nuclear fusion, electric motor, medical, etc. These include initial R&D for 25 T HTS solenoid for Neutron scattering and testing of insert coils for high field magnets and high current HTS cables for fusion research, both in the background field of 10 T dipole.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Take active part in magnet programs

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ph.D. in Physics or Engineering.
Minimum of two years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
Experience with modeling software.
Experience in analyzing experimental data and models.
Experience with superconducting magnets.
Interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff.
Proficiency in the English language (reading, writing and verbal).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Two years of experience in working with superconducting magnets
Hands-on experience in working with HTS coils
Magnetic design analysis software such as OPERA, COMSOL, and ROXIE
Mechanical design analysis software such as ANSYS or COMSOL
