The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for a two-year term Assistant Physicist in the PreInjector Systems Group. This group is responsible for the design, construction, operation and upgrade of ion sources and linear accelerators. The produced and accelerated proton, polarized proton and heavy ions are provided to the Radioisotope Production Facility, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory. The successful candidate will participate in developments and operations of all existing ion sources which includes the laser ion source (LIS), electron beam ion source (EBIS), negative proton ion source and optically pumped polarized ion source. Furthermore, he or she will work on polarized He3 beam production project using the extended EBIS.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operation of the LIS, EBIS and linear accelerators.
Development of the extended EBIS including polarized He3 beam production.
Development of RF cavities.
Studies on ion sources.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ph.D. in Plasma Physics or Accelerator Physics
Demonstrated accomplishment in development and operation of a laser ion source
Strong expertize in development and operation of an EBIS
Experience with RF systems and beam dynamics in linear accelerators
Familiarity with polarized ion sources
Demonstrated ability to perform research independently and as part of a research group
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with ion sources and linear accelerators
Experience in instrumentation and development of scientific detector systems
Skills in design and tuning of laser systems and optics
Familiarity with software development, data acquisition and data analysis
- Proficiency in accelerator related software including PARMTEQ, Microwave Studio, TOSCA/OPERA, iGUN and TRAK
