The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for an Advanced Applications Analyst to participate in the RHIC project within the Controls Division's Applications Software Group. The ideal candidate will have strong interest in working within a scientific research environment
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work independently with a team of physicists, engineers, and programmers to develop application software used to control the particle accelerator physics facilities at BNL Collider-Accelerator Department. Responsibilities will include developing, testing, QA and documentation for software developed independently and as part of a team.
- BS degree or equivalent in computer science or related field. plus 1+ year of relevant work experience
- Programming in at least one of the following: Python, Java or C++
- Modular programming within a team environment
- Problem solving and diagnostic skills
- Communication skills, both written and oral
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field
- Linux or UNIX
- Programming in Python
- Programming in Java
- Programming in C++
- Development of RESTful web services including programming using the Java EE platform
- Programming for mobile devices
- The ability to design and develop professional looking graphical user interfaces
- Version control (Git, SVN, Mercurial, or similar)
