Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University. BSA salutes our veterans and active military members with careers that leverage the skills and unique experience they gained while serving our country. Our organization fully supports service members transitioning from active duty to civilian life and pledge’s our commitment to actively hire veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Military personnel who have been formally trained or have relevant experience obtained while in service may meet educational requirements and are encouraged to apply for job opportunities at BSA.

Organizational Overview

The Nuclear and Particle Physics Software (NPPS) Group in the BNL Physics Department is an international leader in scientific software development at the most challenging scales. The group collaborates on a growing number of experiments including the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe (HL-LHC); the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB accelerator in Japan; the DUNE experiment in the US, including the ProtoDUNE experiment at CERN in Europe; the STAR, PHENIX and sPHENIX experiments at BNL's RHIC heavy ion collider; the future electron-ion collider (EIC); and the Vera Rubin Observatory.

Position Description

The NPPS group has an opening for an Advanced Applications Engineer to work as a member of the PanDA (Production and Distributed Analysis) workload management project’s core development team. PanDA was originally developed for ATLAS and is being adopted by other experiments, most recently the Vera Rubin Observatory and the sPHENIX experiment at RHIC.

You will be a major contributor to Rubin PanDA development and operations (together with other PanDA team members), as well as other priority PanDA core development projects and experiment support tasks.

PanDA has an exciting and challenging development path ahead to meet the computing needs of large-scale data intensive science programs like the HL-LHC and Rubin Observatory. You will play an important role in meeting the coming challenges, such as supporting a growing number of new workflows in HEP/NP data analysis, including those emerging from the AI/ML domain.

NPPS group members participate as collaborators in the science programs we work on and engaging with the science is strongly encouraged. You will enjoy a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support PanDA and related software to meet the workload and workflow management needs of the Rubin Observatory (including advancing the capabilities of the software and supporting its use in the hands of users, addressing issues, fixing bugs, improving documentation etc.)
  • Contribute to core PanDA development in support of new workflows such as AI/ML and new experiments and user communities

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on the depth and breadth of relevant engineering knowledge, skills and experience.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Computer Science or related degree, or equivalent experience
  • At least five (5) years of full-time related experience
  • Experience with HEP/NP software
  • Proficiency in scientific software development, particularly Python
  • Familiarity with software engineering practices that include testing, documentation, source code management and release procedures
  • Ability to provide user support and working collaboratively in large teams
  • Clear and concise written, oral, interpersonal communication, and analytical skills
  • Domestic and international travel is expected

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in developing and/or operating distributed computing systems in HEP/NP
  • Experience with AI/ML techniques in application to HEP data, preferably including deep learning algorithms
  • Experience in developing software used by a large number of people

OTHER INFORMATION: (add if applicable)

  • Occasional travel, foreign and domestic, is required
  • If appropriate, hire could start at CERN and then subsequently relocate to BNL
  • Assignment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
