The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The C-AD Accelerator Division Accelerator Physics Group has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop methods to improve the beam quality of the slow extracted beams delivered to the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) and to contribute to potential new slow extraction projects at C-AD. The work for this position will focus on developing new techniques to measure and correct the beam quality of the slow extracted beams including the use of machine learning techniques to develop improved data models and correction algorithms. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community. This position is for a 2-year term research project.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Understanding the slow extraction system and beam quality methods used to prepare the beams for NSRL, both theoretically and experimentally
- Working with the control systems at C-AD and conducting analysis of accelerator data
- Learning how to measure and correct the beam quality for NSRL
- Development of new beam quality compensation systems given the constraints of the existing slow extraction design
- Development of machine learning techniques to further improve the beam quality compensation
- Ph.D. in Accelerator Physics, Physics, or related area
- Experience with software development in a research environment
- Knowledge & experience in statistical data analysis
- Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills
- A record of working successfully with other scientists and engineers
- Research experience demonstrated through publications and/or presentations
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with slow extraction theory and practice
- Experience working in a physics/particle accelerator research environment
- Experience performing beam experiments at a particle accelerator
- Experience simulating synchrotrons using standard modeling tools (e.g., madx)
- Experience with particle tracking simulation techniques
- Knowledge of accelerator instrumentation used in slow extraction systems
- Experience writing beam dynamics simulation codes
- Experience using Python, C++, or Java
- Experience in high performance computing, optimizing code for performance, and writing code that is re-entrant and thread-safe
- Knowledge & experience with basic Data Science techniques and practices
- Experience developing machine learning systems using standard ML tools (scikit-learn, tensorflow, keras, etc.)
- Knowledge of magnet design and methods of measuring magnetic fields
- Experience working in UNIX/Linux environment
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years. Initial two year appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding.
